In the early 1800s, Owen Chase is offered as First Mate on the New England whaling ship Essex. The problem is that, Owen was promised as Captain on the voyage, but the less-experienced son of a wealthy sailing family George Pollard, has been selected as the Captain. Chase is total disturbed with this decision, but he agrees to sign when he gets a promise in writing that he won't be overlooked next time. Anyway they don't want to go back to their own home until they've found more whales. During the hunt the vessel is attacked by something no one could believe, a giant white whale.
